It’s not just tips that hotel customers leave behind, guests often leave things that don’t quite fit the concept of“light mess.” Welcome tothe world ofunexpected hotel secrets!
- Myfriend’s family ran alittle hotel atthe beach. Nothing fancy, but itwas oceanfront. Myfriend once went toaroom toclean, and found the entire place clean. Not just wipedup, etc.
The walls and ceilings had been scrubbed, the carpets looked like they had been shampooed, the tub/shower looked brand new (quite anaccomplishment atthe beach with super hard water and salt spray), the bed frame had been cleaned, the old beach furniture had been cleaned and repaired, the knobs and track onthe sliding glass door had been polished, the railings onthe deck had been thoroughly scrubbed, the dirty linens were stripped and folded with asign saying “dirty.” ©Ba**************sh/ Reddit - Some kids accidentally broke open one ofthose foam pillows. The ones you can shape into anything and they are very comfy. Well, it’s full oftiny pellets. They were excited about the snow and the parents had stepped out, sothey jammed itinto the HVAC unit and turned iton.
The HVAC unit shot out little snowy specs into the air and actually looked like snow toour housekeeper’s horror. The maintenance technician turned itonimmediately after she cleaned ituptosee ifitwas working correctly. Itwasn’t.© ****_Sally/ Reddit - Iwent tothe room after guests. The room was trashed with garbage everywhere and literally apizza slice stuck tothe ceiling (which I’m assuming was made purposefully asajoke?) but one thing stuck out. The fridge was missing. Ilooked around but couldn’t findit. “Did they stealit?”
The momentI entered the other bedroom suite, which was aswell trashed but not asbad asthe previous one, and went inone ofthe bedrooms, Ifinally sawit. The fridge was there. They moved the fridge from one suite tothe other and put itnext tothe bed. Wecharged them for the trashed room.©54rtrt/ Reddit - Iwas ahousekeeper for 3weeks inaclassy boutique hotel whenI first moved toadifferent country before finding abetter job. The first roomI cleaned was one ofthe fancier suites, and upon opening the door, itwas clear the occupants had set off numerous confetti crackers the night before.
There was golden confetti everywhere. But most ofitwas concentrated inthe bed and inthe big clawfoot bathtub. Then atrail ofwet confetti tothe shower. Nightmare tocleanup.©mockinbirdwishmeluck/ Reddit
- Aformer colleague used towork asahotel housekeeper. The strangest thing heever found was aguest who had left the mini fridge filled tothe brim with sausages.©amvoloshin/ Reddit
- Ionly have found alittle cute bat inaroom sleeping onthe carpet. Itwanted tosleep, soitdidn’t bother atall whenI was moving itaway.©cat_******24/ Reddit
- Iwalked into aroom tobegin the cleaning, whenI noticed the carpet bythe bathroom door was wet. Iopened the door tosee anoverflowing toilet, itwas disgusting. The people that stayed inthe room the previous night had tried toflush adiaper, and instead oftelling the receptionist about the problem, they just kept going ontop ofit.
Ifound mysupervisor, showed her the mess, and was told toscoop out the bowl and plungeit. Ihanded over mysmock and left.©Unknown author/ Reddi - Iwas cleaning aroom after aguest had checked out, and itwas nice tosee that they had made the bed before leaving. Obviously Iwas going tohave tore-make itwith fresh clean sheets, but itdemonstrated alevel ofrespect for the hotel and staff. Ihad all the new sheets prepared, andI was aware ofasmall mound underneath the top cover.
Not thinking too much ofitI pulled itback and something shot out toward meand started flapping inapanic inmyface before flying around the room dropping all over the place looking for away out. Itwas apigeon. Some bad person had seemingly plucked the poor thing from the window and thought the aftermath would befunny.
The aftermath was chasing aterrified pigeon toward anopen window for half anhour, droppings scrubbing and back and forth discussions about tetanus shots.©ThatsAStrangeName/ Reddit - When Iwas staying atamotel onaroad trip, weleft our cat behind inthe room. Wecouldn’t find him inthe morning after wehad loaded the car, and thought hehad escaped through our feet when weweren’t looking. Wechecked everywhere and the only place hecould bewas underneath the bed, which was blocked off, except for asmall crack wethought the cat was too much ofafatty tofit through.
Apparently hewasn’t too fat and hid, without making asound. They found him waiting onthe bed the next morning and calledus. Wedrove 6hours back topick himup! ©Linith/ Reddit
- Idon’t know which maid ended uphaving tofind this, but: acouple ofdays ago onaroad trip, Ibroke off one ofmyincisors eating kubideh (Iknow, hard todowith ground meat), about acentimeter-long chunk, everything but the root. Ikept the tooth and had itonthe desk inmyhotel room; atone pointI accidentally knocked itonto the floor and Ithought, “Ineed toremember topick that upbefore Ileave.”
Ididn’t remember, soI’m just hoping the maid vacuumed itupwithout noticing what itwas.©Unknown author/ Reddit - I’m terrified ofspiders. It’s been amajor phobia ofmine since childhood. Amonth ago, Iwent onabusiness trip and stayed inahotel. Icame out ofthe shower and saw that ahuge spider was crawling near the bed!
Isquealed, ran back into the bathroom and locked myselfin. Istarted topanic, was terrified tocome out. Iwanted tocall reception toget the spider removed. But the phone was onthe bedside table!
Iput atowel onthe floor and dozed inthe bathroom all night. Luckily, inthe morning amaid knocked onthe door, came inand savedme.©Chamber 6/ VK - According tothe maid: she came intoclean the room. Guests have not yet left, intermediate cleaning. Inthe bathroom, there was half apizza inabox onthe floor. Naturally, she threw itaway. The guests complained.
Turns out they were warming upthe pizza. The bathroom has heated floors. They ate half ofthe pizza, then put the other half “towarmup,” while they went for awalk and put upasign “Clean the room.” ©Overheard/ VK - Was onalazy holiday atthe sea and already didn’t know what else toget myself busy with. Ivisited all interesting places, swam inthe sea, sunbathed onthe beach, tasted local dishes. Itbecame frankly boring, despite the fact thatI wasn’t alone there. That’s whyI came upwith aweird hobby quite byaccident.
Inoticed that towel figures, made bythe maids, depend onthe amount ofatip. So, Igradually left abigger and bigger tip and admired their creativity. Onmylast day ofholiday, Igot afull-sized towel person with fruit ontop ofit. Itseems I’m not the only one bored here.©Ward No.6/ VK
- Iworked room service atahotel. One ofthe funniest thingsI remember seeing was during adelivery for ahoneymoon package. The secondI walked into the room, Icould say thatI was not the first person tohave been inthere.
Someone had tossed rose petals around the room and added some decorations for their magical night. The one that stood out though: a3’x3′ print out ofthe bride’s father with amassive, cheesy grin and athumbs-up. Itwas taped tothe ceiling directly above the bed.©Unknown author/ Reddit - Iworked atahotel, and this guy that had been staying withus for amonth was checking out. Hedidn’t leave meatip but goes, “Check the bottom drawer onthe nightstand, that’s for you.”
So, Igo uptohis room, look atthe bottom drawer, and itwas full ofonly dimes and nickels totaling $40. Noquarters, nopennies, nodollar bills, only dimes and nickels. Itwas the weirdest thing ever, but hey, that was agood tip.©DubsTx/ Reddit - Mymom isthe manager ofahousekeeping department inahotel. Recently, she had gone into aroom tocheck itout for acash deposit. There was aneck pillow and alarge, rather lumpy looking pillow left onthe bed.
Just asshe was about topick both ofthemup, the phone rang. She went over and answeredit. Itwas the front desk, inapanic, telling her that there was asnake inthe room. Just asshe was being told this information, she noticed that the lumpy pillow had started tomove.
She slowly put down the phone, and walked out ofthe room backwards. The next thing she knew, the guest that had been inthat room came flying down the hallway like abat out ofhell, apologizing toher.©psytramp/ Reddit - Iwork atahotel asamaid. Today Iwas cleaning aroom where acouple with achild, about 2–3 years old, stays. The mother and child came tothe room whenI was finishing cleaning.
She asked mefor the vacuum cleaner and did avery strange thing: she disconnected the brush, left the hose, and connected some kind oftube toit. Then she put the tube upthe child’s nose and turned the vacuum cleaneron. This way, she helped her child toget rid ofphlegm and shocked meatthe same time.©Ward 6/ VK
